Strawberry gariguette DSC03063

The strawberry, a commonly known accessory fruit

An accessory fruit (false fruit, spurious fruit, or pseudocarp) is a fruit where some of the flesh is not from the plant's ovary, but from adjacent tissue. The fig tree, Ficus carica has accessory fruits known as syconiums. Pomes, such as apples and pears are accessory fruits as well, because the true fruit itself is the core.

The terms, false fruit, spurious fruit, and pseudocarp are no longer used by botanists today.
