Adenostoma sparsifolium (red shank, redshank, or ribbonwood) is a tree or shrub found on dry slopes of the chaparrals of California and Baja California. Falling shanks or ribbons of bark are one of the main characteristics of this plant. Red shanks are closely related to a more abundant species of Adenostoma, Adenostoma fasciculatum (Chamise).
