André Joseph Guillaume Henri Kostermans was a Dutch botanist, who was born in Purworejo in the Dutch West Indies. He took a doctoral degree in 1936 with a paper on Lauraceae of Suriname.

He spent lots of his professional life studying plants of southwest Asia. During an early stage of his life, he contributed a number of family treatments to Pulle's Flora of Suriname. Kostermans was especially interested in plants of the Lauraceae family (Laurales), Bombacaceae, Sterculiaceae, and Dipterocarpaceae (Malvales). More recently, he began his study of Anacardiaceae.

In 1991, Kosterman suffered a heart attack. Three years later, he died in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Recognition[]

The genus, Kostermansia was named after Kosterman by Wertit Soegeng-Reksodihardjo, and the species of Cryptocarya kostermansiana was named after him by C.K.Allen.
