Attalus III Philometor Euergetes (in Greek Άτταλος Γ' της Περγάμου) was the last Attalid king of Pergamon, ruling from 138 BC to 133 BC. He often studied botany and gardening.
Biography[]
Attalus was born at about 170 BC to Eumenes II and Stratonice. Later, Attalus III succeeded his uncle, Attalus II. He married Berenice (in Greek Βερενίκη), who were the parents of a daughter who is assumed to be the Princess of Pergamum, who was the mother of another Berenice, who married the king of Galatia, Deiotaros I Philoromaios. "Philometer Euergetes" means "Loving-his-Mother, Benefactor" in Greek, which referred to his close relationship with his mother, Stratonice.
He had little interest in leading Pergamon, devoting most of his time to medicine, botany, and gardening. He had no male children of his own, and in his will, he left his kingdom to the Roman Republic.
