Chondrosea cotyledon (Pyramidal Saxifrage) is a species of plant in the Saxifragaceae family. It occurs in the mountains of Europe.
The plant has rosettes about 8 inches across on tongue-shaped leaves, beaded and not toothed. In May or June, its panicles of white flowers, which are branched and pyramidal, may reach 2 inches. It is often placed in the Saxifraga, with the typical saxifrages, but it is otherwise separated in the Chondrosea genus. Its relationship to silver saxifrages remains to be resolved to full satisfaction.
Horticulture[]
To produce flowers, it is sometimes necessary to remove and save for propagation on all side rosettes. A flowering rosette dies after blooming. C. cotyledon is one of the most beautiful silver saxifrages, and is very easy to grow.
C. cotyledon is the floral emblem of Norway.
