The site was created on February 24, 2007 by Raffi[1] using a Wiki model licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike License. As using a wiki model, Gardenology.org is built through collaboration of gardeners from around the world. Articles can cover information about individual species or cultivars, families of plants, a gardening term, or a gardening topic. While the project uses MediaWiki software, which is also used by Wikia, Inc. and Wikimedia, Gardenology.org does not belong to any of these sites; it was begun and operated independently.

"Seriously though, the biggest help you can provide at this point besides actually editing and adding to articles is getting the word out."
―Raffi[src]

Gardenology.org is said to be in need of advertisement. In order to accomplish more advertisement, some features have been added to include this. A Gardenology.org search box can be placed on certain websites and blogs, which allows a person to type in a topic, and it will use the Gardenology.org search. So far Gardennauta, Avant-Gardening, Teza's Garden, and Organic Gardening Way use the search bar.[2]

Gardenology.org has also expanded advertising by creating fan pages on Facebook and Twitter, as well as creating t-shirts of Gardenology.org.[3]
