Naming and discovery

Glossopteridales is an extinct order of plants in the Pteridospermatophyta division. They originated on the southern continent of Gondwana during the Permian, but became extinct by the end of the Permian. It consists of only one family, Glossopteridaceae, which contains the Glossopteris genus.

Because of the abundace of Glossopteridale fossils that have been discovered, scientists are able to find out so much about the speices. Data has been collected from their oddly shaped roots, stumps, seeds, leaves and branches.
