The receptacle (grey) with the ovary (red) in three different types of flowers: hypogynous (I), perigynous (II), and epigynous (III).
A receptacle is the thickened part of a stem where the flower organs grow. In some accessory fruits such as pomes and strawberries, the receptacle helps create the edible part of the fruit.
The fruit of Rubus plants are in a cluster of drupelets on a conical receptacle. When a raspberry is picked, the receptacle is left behind on the plant, while with blackberries, the receptacle comes with the picked fruit.
